This page covers the file formats to use for diagrams and animated graphics. Requirements that apply to all graphics, such as alt text and embedded text, are on the images page.

Use SVG for diagrams when possible; fall back to PNG. Avoid transparent backgrounds. Do not use animated GIFs; use MP4 or another resource-efficient format instead.

Rationale

SVG scales without blurring and MP4 is efficient, while animated GIFs are large and cannot be paused, which hurts performance and accessibility.
